AWARA (1951)

Time can really be cruel to certain works of art. It was with a great deal of interest that I sat to watch this film, which kind of became a cult film with a cult following, even in such far away countries such as the Soviet Union. I was truly disappointed with the tale of a father-son relationship, the boy who grows up to be a petty thief because of the kindness of a dacoit (K N Singh) who had once abducted the hero’s mother (Leela Chitnis) leading to the abandoning of the mother-son duo by the father (Prithiviraj Kapoor). The heroine (Nargis) plays a lawyer and the sweetheart of the hero (Raj Kapoor) right from his childhood.

Certain dream sequences filmed inventively have been used. The film was possibly bold by the standards of those days, and the heroine could be seen cavorting in a swimwear.
